Tournament fights hunger as boxers are starved for bouts

The mission to battle poverty among boxers will commence on Friday night when businessman Jacob Mnisi is due to stage a tournament in Sandton, Gauteng.

Mnisi said that boxers have been starved of fights for too long, so he is aiding the careers of boxers by organising tournaments which he intends to stage all over the country.

In this maiden competition, Mnisi, who is licensed as a promoter under J4Joy Boxing Promotions, has matched SA lightweight champion Tshifiwa “Atomic Soldier” Munyai against Khaya “Destroyer” Busakwe.

Munyai, who is a former Commonwealth, IBO, WBA Pan African and intercontinental kingpin, will be defending his title for the first time.

On the undercard, KZN’s Innocent “Tycoon” Mantengu and Luthando Mbumbulwana from the Eastern Cape will battle for the vacant WBA Pan African junior featherweight title.

Lyton Gloss will defend his Gauteng bantamweight crown against Tumelo Matsane.

Mnisi said growing up in Mpumalanga he used to box as an amateur and it hurt him to see boxers hanging up their gloves because promoters weren’t arranging fights.

“Which is why I have rolled up my sleeves by staging tournaments,” he said.

He said he is starting on a high note with this impressive bill on Friday.

“Boxing enthusiasts will enjoy the bouts watching from home as the tournament will be broadcast live on SABC,” said Mnisi, who was once married to the late kwaito star, Mshoza.

The promoter said the fights will be graced by the presence of the newly-installed Zulu king, Misuzulu kaZwelithini.
