  • Residents face dangerous travel conditions, flooded roads and damaged homes as experts warn people to prepare for freezing weather safely.

Severe storms and heavy rain are battering four provinces, bringing dangerous floods and travel delays.

The South African Weather Service says a strong weather system, known as a cut-off low, is hitting the country. It brings between 40mm and 90mm of rain.

The bad weather started striking the Free State, North West, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape today, 30 April. The weather service has put out level four and level six warnings for these areas.

The worst weather is hitting parts of the Free State, North West and Northern Cape under a level six warning. Residents in these areas face flooded roads, damaged homes and broken daily routines.

Travel is dangerous. Drivers face flooded roads and a high risk of accidents.

Areas under a level four warning are seeing less intense rain, but conditions remain risky.

Experts warn people to drive carefully and avoid flooded roads. Residents must stay away from trees and tall objects during the storms.

The cold, wet weather brings extra risks for homes. Experts say people must check their roofs, clear their gutters and stop their pipes from freezing.

Families trying to stay warm also face a higher risk of house fires. Experts warn households to be very careful when using heaters and electric blankets.
