Ezakheni: The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the life sentence handed down to two men aged 25 and 22 by the Ezakheni Regional Court, following their conviction on a charge of rape. Their co-accused, 19, was sentenced to 15 years in prison as he was a minor under 18 years old at the time of the offence. The court heard that on the evening of 21 April 2024, the complainant, who was 17 years old at the time, was walking home when she noticed three males following her. She attempted to avoid them by changing direction, but they continued to pursue her. The men eventually caught up with her and she recognised one of them, the 25-year-old accused, as he had previously made romantic advances towards her. The accused pointed firearms at the complainant and demanded money and a cellphone. When she indicated that she had no valuables, they stated that she should be “punished.” They then took her to a secluded area near a river where they raped her.
