The club no longer has faith in me – Zidane

Zinedine Zidane has explained his shock resignation as Real Madrid coach in an open letter to the fans.

“I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me or the support to build something in the medium or long term,” said Zidane.

Zidane enjoyed great success in his first spell with the club, where he won three successive UEFA Champions League titles and a La Liga title. He is the only coach in Champions League history to have won the Champions League title consecutively.

In 2018, he stepped down but only to return to the Spanish giants a season later following Santiago Solari’s failed stint.

However, his second spell wasn’t as successful as the first.

He won the La Liga title last season but failed to defend it this season. He also had a miserable run in this season’s Champions League, losing to Chelsea in the semi-final.

“I’ve had the enormous honour of being a player and coach at the greatest club ever but above all I’m just another Madrid fan,” he said.

“For all these reasons I wanted to write this letter to say goodbye to you and explain my decision.”

There are already two names being mentioned for the vacant managerial position. Antonio Conte is available after parting ways with Inter Milan last week, and current Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is another option for Los Blancos.
