King Misuzulu brings back royal wedding after last-minute u-turn

The Zulu King has changed his mind – his royal wedding is back on, writes Celani Sikhakhane in his Royal Mzansi column.

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini will marry Queen Nomzamo kaMyeni at Jozini Stadium on Sunday, just days after calling off the event to mourn his grandmother, Queen Majiyane.

Sources close to the royal court said preparations were already well under way when the cancellation was announced earlier this week.

“When the King realised how much had already been spent, he decided the wedding must continue to avoid wasting taxpayers’ money,” said a royal insider.

Marquees are being set up at Jozini Stadium, though some members of the Zulu and Swati royal families have not been informed about the reversal.

The King had announced on Wednesday that the family would pause celebrations to mourn Queen Majiyane, who passed away at her home in Ntuzuma, north of Durban.

She was married to Prince Golden Zulu, son of Queen Esther and King Solomon, but had long lived away from the main royal palaces.

The Queen Nomzamo Foundation later dismissed reports of a cancellation as fake news and confirmed that the wedding would continue.

According to Zulu custom, weddings cannot be cancelled even when a family member dies, as it is seen as bad luck.

This is the second time the royal wedding has been delayed — the first was in January when the King was in seclusion.

Queen Nomzamo kaMyeni will be the first of King Misuzulu’s wives to have a public wedding ceremony.
