Kane rescues a point for England in Munich

Harry Kane scored his 50th international goal late in the game to secure a point in a 1-1 draw with Germany at the Allianz Arena.

The hosts controlled the first half but they struggled in the final third and couldn’t convert their chances. Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Jonas Hofmann had a goal disallowed just before the half hour mark, with the first period ending goalless.

Hofmann was picked out by Joshua Kimmich five minutes into the second half, this time sending his shot past Jordan Pickford and into the England goal to give Germany the lead. Pick should arguably have done better, and manager Gareth Southgate may be thinking about turning to the services of Arsenal man Aaron Ramsdale.

The visitors showed bright moments on the counter but struggled with their delivery from set pieces. The introductions of Jack Grealish and Jarrod Bowen added a creative spark for Gareth Southgate’s side and with ten minutes to go, Kane had almost scored the equaliser.

The Spurs centre forward slid in from the right-hand side of the box to provide a certain finish into the bottom corner before being denied by a remarkable Manuel Neuer block.

With just over two minutes of the 90 to play, Kane would get his chance to level proceedings. The three lions got a spot kick after a challenge from Nico Schlotterbeck on Kane, with VAR coming into play in what was a controversial decision.

Nonetheless, the England captain buried it into the bottom left corner to score his 50th international goal — going ahead of the great Bobby Charlton and finding himself behind only Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top goal scorer.

Italy beat Hungary 2-1 in the other game in group A3, leaving them top of the group with 4 points ahead of their trip to Wembley on Saturday evening. Hungary hosts Germany at the same time.
