SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has given a glowing rating to the first season of his return to the Tshwane side.
Just two seasons ago, the 58-year-old trainer was sacked by Kaizer Chiefs despite guiding them to their first-ever CAF Champions League semi-finals.
That was followed by a short and unsuccessful stint at Chippa United.
Hunt then retraced his roots to SuperSport, a side he helped to claim three successive Premier Soccer League titles between 2008 and 2010.
Now back at Matsatsantsa, he appears to have silenced his critics who thought he was now a spent force basking in past success.
The experienced coach led SuperSport back to the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time since the 2016/17 season after finishing third on the PSL table.
“And that’s a wrap SuperSport FC, what a season. So proud of the boys,” said Hunt as he reflected on the season.
“First season back with SuperSport, couldn’t be happier.”
Finishing third is the Tshwane outfit’s best finish in the PSL since the 2011/12 campaign.
To make Hunt’s season more memorable, he inflicted revenge on Chiefs, a club that discarded him and left him with a bruised ego.
He returned to beat Amakhosi in the penultimate league fixture of the season and went on to proclaim, “Three points never tasted so sweet.”
The result contributed to Chiefs finishing fifth on the table.
After the stint at Naturena might have left some doubting Hunt’s capabilities, he has invigorated himself to be a 2022/23 Coach of the Season nominee.
Three SuperSport players, Ricardo Goss, Thepelo Maseki and Shandre Campbell, are also up for PSL awards in different categories.
This season Hunt rebuilt SuperSport without spending a single cent in the transfer market after opting for free agents, loanees and promoting academy players to the first team.
