- King Misuzulu asked the DA to support President Cyril Ramaphosa in calling for calm before the local government elections.
- The King said tensions over illegal immigration must not be used to divide South Africans or target tribal groups.
King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has raised concerns that protests over illegal immigration could disrupt the upcoming local government elections.
The King raised the issue during a meeting with the DA leadership at eMashobeni Royal Palace in Pongola, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday.
DA federal leader Geordin Hill-Lewis visited the King to introduce himself and his newly elected leadership team.
King Misuzulu said the country was going through a difficult time as anger over illegal immigration grew in many communities.
He called on the DA to help President Cyril Ramaphosa calm tensions before election day.
“I know it is a difficult time for the government as we face the issue of illegal immigration protests, but I call on the DA leadership to unite to calm and support the President so we can have peaceful elections in the country,” said King Misuzulu.
“I know our people are complaining about issues that affect them directly.”
The King said public anger must not be allowed to turn into violence or division between communities.
Last week, King Misuzulu also expressed anger at people who he said were trying to turn the Zulu nation against the Vatsonga people.
He said it was wrong to suggest that anti-illegal immigration protests were being driven by Zulus against the Vatsonga people.
He described the claims as deeply insulting and racially targeting him.
Hill-Lewis told the King that culture and good governance both matter in building a better country.
“Culture gives us our roots. Good government gives us the opportunity to flourish. Together, they can help build a country that works for all its people,” said Hill-Lewis.
He said the DA would continue meeting leaders and communities across South Africa.
Hill-Lewis said the party wanted to listen, build trust and find common ground on issues such as jobs, safety, dignity, service delivery and opportunity.
The DA delegation also presented cattle to King Misuzulu as a sign of respect to the Zulu monarch.
