Roy Moodley, a longtime friend of former President Jacob Zuma, has joined forces with former National Freedom Party figure Sindi Mashinini to contest the City of eThekwini and other municipalities in November’s local government elections.
Moodley resigned from the South African National Civic Organisation, an ANC alliance partner, where he served as Treasurer General, and founded the African Movement Congress in 2023, contesting the 29 May general election. He was later expelled from the AMC’s leadership by the party’s disciplinary committee, and has since formed a breakaway organisation using the same name, AMC.Roy.
Mashinini, a founding member of the National Freedom Party alongside the late Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, has now partnered with Moodley’s AMC.Roy, with the City of eThekwini as their main focus.
On Friday, the pair met with the party’s candidates at AMC.Roy’s offices in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban, to sign candidate registration forms ahead of the 4 November elections.
Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, Mashinini said she and Moodley had agreed to work together for the development of the people of eThekwini.
“We discussed thoroughly my vision, which is to develop women so that they can work for themselves and look after their families and communities. My vision is to see women being developed, because those people are the kind of people who make things happen once they’re able to work for themselves,” Mashinini said.
She said their main focus is a strong campaign in the City of eThekwini, though the party is also active in other provinces, including the North West, where volunteers are working to establish AMC.Roy.
Moodley founded the original AMC to represent what he described as the unfinished revolution of South Africa’s masses in the fight against racial segregation and imperialism.
