India – The arrival of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at a rally in Aligarh, still got people excited with the crowd waving party flags and chanting slogans. Modi is campaigning for a third consecutive term. The rally showed the strong support Modi enjoys in Uttar Pradesh, a key state in India’s Hindi-speaking region, where his popularity is high yet his influence remains controversial.
China – A major highway in Guangdong province, China, collapsed early Wednesday, 1 May, killing 36 people. The incident happened on a section of the expressway connecting Meizhou City and Dabu County. State media reported that ongoing rescue efforts have so far retrieved 23 vehicles. About 30 people injured in the collapse are now hospitalised and in stable condition. The local government sent out a major rescue operation, deploying about 500 people.
Kenya – The Red Cross in Kenya successfully rescued 11 people and a dog from severe floods in Kitengela, Kajiado County, early on Wednesday. Despite the challenging conditions, there is hope as the floodwaters are reported to be easing. However, the government, through spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, has issued warnings of more expected rainfall which could worsen the current flood situation. Over the past day, flooding has claimed an additional 10 lives, raising the national death toll to 179, including 15 children with many still missing.
USA – The Joe Biden administration has introduced a new set of environmental regulations aimed at reducing pollution from power plants. These regulations say that coal and new natural gas power plants decrease 90% of their emissions by 2032. This move is expected to lower carbon dioxide emissions in the sector by 75% from 2005 levels. Additionally, stricter measures have been introduced to manage mercury emissions and the disposal of toxic byproducts like wastewater and coal ash.
