- Armed robbers struck outside a tavern in Pienaar just weeks after eight people died in another tavern shooting.
- Police are hunting for the gunmen who opened fire after trying to rob the Zwelisha tavern on Sunday.
Gunmen have struck again in Pienaar, Mpumalanga, shooting three people outside a tavern on Sunday night.
The attack comes less than a month after eight people died in another tavern shooting in the same area.
The latest victims were rushed to hospital after being hit when robbers started shooting as they left the tavern in Zwelisha.
“The suspects began shooting randomly outside and that’s when the three victims got shot as they were outside the tavern premises,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Jabu Ndubane.
Police are still checking what was stolen during the robbery. No arrests have been made.
This is the second mass shooting in Mpumalanga this year. On January 11, gunmen killed eight people at another Pienaar tavern. Five men and one woman died at the scene, while two more victims died later in hospital. Three others were wounded.
The province’s top cop is angry about the latest attack.
“We really want arrests because a few weeks ago we had a shooting incident at another liquor store in the same area of Pienaar where many lives were lost. We cannot allow lawlessness to continue like this. It is about the lives of people that we cannot gamble with.
“We are working around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to book,” said Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi.
