Ramaphosa moves SA to Level 2 as Covid cases mount again

The third wave is upon us.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on stricter lockdown measures on Sunday evening.

It’s up to Level 2 now. The curfew for non essential locations is from 10pm to 4am and all gatherings will be limited to a maximum of 100 people indoors and 250 people outdoors.

Ramaphosa said Free State, Northern Cape, North West and Gauteng have all reached the threshold of a third wave of infections.

Over the last seven days, there’s been average of 3,745 daily new infections. Ramaphosa said this is an increase of 31% on the previous week, and an increase of 66% on the week before that.

Earlier this week, Scrolla.Africa reported on the risk of low levels of oxygen in hospitals as the next wave approaches.

Although the vaccination programme has finally started, South Africa is still behind most countries. According to the Financial Times’ global vaccine tracker, SA is currently far down the list, between Gambia and Liberia, with 1.2 doses per 100 people. Ramaphosa confirmed 960,000 people had got their first dose.
