Family basics cost almost double the average salary

By Palesa Matlala

• Food, rent, utilities, transport, school, healthcare, phones and internet could cost a family of four more than R42,000 a month.

• PayInc recorded an average net salary of R21,598 in June, showing how household costs can easily outrun one person’s pay.

For many South African families, payday money can disappear fast.

A family of four could spend more than R42,000 a month just covering everyday expenses.

The example is based on two adults and two school-going children. It includes food, rent, electricity and water, transport, school costs, healthcare, phones, internet and a small amount for entertainment.

That R42,000 monthly bill is almost twice the R21,598 average net salary recorded by PayInc in June 2026.

PayInc tracks about 2.1-million salary earners in South Africa.

Its figures show that while salaries have increased slightly, workers can buy less with their money than they could a year ago.

Where does the R42,000 go?

Food for a family of four cost about R3,849 in July, according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group’s Basic Nutritional Food Basket.

A three-bedroom flat outside a city centre costs about R13,337 a month, according to Numbeo.

Electricity, water and other basic utilities add another R2,179.

The example budget includes R1,600 for transport and about R1,796 for two mobile phone plans and internet.

School costs are estimated at R3,500 per child, bringing the bill to R7,000 for two children. This is only an example as school fees differ.

Healthcare takes another big bite.

Using the 2026 Discovery Health Classic Smart Saver rates, medical scheme cover for two adults and two children costs R11,830 a month.

Only R480 is included for entertainment, equal to four cinema tickets at R120 each.

Together, the expenses come to about R42,062 a month. That adds up to more than R504,000 a year.

One salary falls far short

A worker taking home PayInc’s average R21,598 salary could not cover the R42,062 family budget alone.

The PayInc figure represents the salary of one worker, not the total income of a household.

But it shows how difficult life can be for families relying on one income or even two lower salaries.

Rent, groceries, school costs, transport and healthcare can quickly swallow a family’s monthly income.

The R42,062 figure is only an example. Every household has different costs depending on where they live and what they spend on housing, school, transport and healthcare.

But the figures show the squeeze facing many households: basic expenses are taking a huge bite out of family budgets while salaries struggle to keep up.
