Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says there are traps waiting for his team in the Betway Premiership title race.
He made the comments after Stellenbosch FC held Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.
The draw leaves Sundowns on 57 points. They are one point behind log leaders Orlando Pirates. Sundowns have played 24 matches and have a game in hand over Pirates.
Katlego Ntsabeleng gave Sundowns the lead in the first half of the match.
In the 53rd minute, the referee ruled out a goal by Tashreeq Matthews for offside. Sundowns would have been 2-0 up if the goal counted.
Cardoso was upset but tried not to say too much.
“There are a lot of traps on our way up until the end. I do not want to speak too much,” he said.
He said he needed to protect himself, but he believed TV replays showed Matthews was not offside.
Cardoso refused to talk more about the referees. He said journalists and people in charge must speak up because they can watch the screens.
Stellenbosch FC fought back late in the game. With four minutes left, Khulumani Ndamane made a bad tackle on Chumani Butsaka.
The referee gave a penalty. Tshegofatso Mabasa scored the penalty to win a point for Stellenbosch.
Next, Sundowns will play an away match against Richards Bay on Sunday.
Cardoso said his team must feel free to express themselves in matches. He said the team has the maturity to handle the pressure of the title race.
“We need to be aggressive from the beginning so that we do not allow ourselves to be exposed to bad luck or a small mistake that can turn the game around,” Cardoso said.
