The manhunt for the killers of two Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officers has led to another breakthrough.
Police arrested a second suspect, a 37-year-old foreign man, at a house in RTJ Namane Drive, Temong section, Tembisa. He was taken to Tembisa South police station.
Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Thabiso Makgatho said it was a targeted operation to find the last suspect in the case. “The suspect had been at large and was considered armed and dangerous,” she said.
He faces charges of murder, robbery and breaking immigration laws. He will appear in court in the next few days.
On 12 June, the two officers were sitting in their car waiting for colleagues from the intervention unit when gunmen walked up and opened fire in the Umthambeka Section of Tembisa.
The attackers stole the officers’ service pistols and ran to a waiting getaway car. Paramedics declared both officers dead at the scene.
Police launched a major search and earlier caught the first suspect. The second arrest was made during a joint operation involving metro police, the South African Police Service crime intelligence and the Hawks.
The service pistols have still not been found. Investigators are now checking if more suspects were involved in the deadly attack.
