Two Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police officers were shot dead in an ambush while waiting for backup in Tembisa on Thursday night.
The officers were sitting in their car in the Umthambeka Section when gunmen approached and opened fire.
Police said the criminals shot both officers and stole their service pistols before fleeing on foot to a waiting getaway car.
Paramedics declared both officers dead at the scene.
Different police units rushed to the shooting, along with the City of Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Safety, Sizakele Masuku.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato confirmed the attack and said a full investigation was underway.
Deputy Director of Metro Police Specialised Services, Bheki Nhlapo, said officers at the scene were heartbroken by the killing of their colleagues.
He appealed to the community to help catch the killers.
“Community members must come forward with information that will help police find these criminals,” he told Tembisa Online.
The officers had been waiting for colleagues from the intervention unit when they were ambushed.
Police have launched a massive manhunt for the gunmen, who are still on the run.
