No laughing matter: fans pitch in to save comedian’s house

When Durban comedian Simphiwe Shembe posted a video on social networks last week about his frustrations, his fans knew it was not a prank or a joke.

Simphiwe told Scrolla.Africa that had the fans and colleagues not come through for him, his house would have been auctioned off last month.

He said his desperate situation also touched his colleagues in the entertainment industry who also came forward with whatever they could.

“The lockdown affected me big time and I posted about my plight,” he said.

“To my surprise,  my fans organised among themselves and came forward with donations. I couldn’t believe the love they showed me. I am happy that I came out instead of hiding my bad situation.”

The comedian also revealed that he gave up his car as he was battling to keep up with the monthly payments.

“I don’t care that much about losing the car. At least me and my family still have a roof over our heads,” he said.

Simphiwe said his experience has made him come up with the Save My House Comedy show that he will stage at Gateway Hotel on 19 February.

“Some of the material I will use during the show will be about me almost losing my house. I have lined up Skhumba Hlophe, Fly Motion, Simunye Churchboy and others.”

Tickets for the show can be purchased through Webtickets.
