Nelson Mandela Bay faces more flooding

By Anita Dangazele

Nelson Mandela Bay is preparing for another day of flooding as weather warnings jumped from level one to level five on Monday night.

The city has opened an emergency centre after some areas received more rain than expected—20mm instead of the predicted 15mm.

Weather Service forecaster Kevin Ingram warned that worse weather is coming.

“Some models for Tuesday predict between 20mm and 45mm of rain, with most expected to fall between midnight and 2am,” said Ingram.

“Thundershowers could also move inland from the coast. These predictions led us to escalate the warning level and to help the municipality prepare accordingly.”

The city faces more flooding as the ground is still wet from recent storms.

Safety chief Shadrack Sibiya said community halls are ready for people needing shelter.

The rain should clear by Tuesday, but a cold front might bring more bad weather this weekend.

Other parts of the Eastern Cape face storms with hail and lightning.

Several roads have been closed due to the bad weather.

Meanwhile, November snow might close the Lootsberg Pass between Middelburg and Graaff-Reinet, and the Wapadsberg Pass between Graaff-Reinet and Nxuba.

“There’s some very belated snowfall in that area, so our rapid response teams are on high alert,” said transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose.
