Lamati ‘making progress every day’

By Razeen Gutta

South African boxer Ludumo Lamati is now alert and making daily progress after suffering a brain bleed during his match with Nick Ball last weekend.

In the midst of his WBC silver featherweight title match with the British fighter, Lamati collapsed and had to be stretchered out of the Belfast arena after his corner threw in the towel and had the match stopped.

He was rushed to hospital and put into a medically-induced coma.

Scans last week confirmed that the 31-year-old was out of danger; and Boxing 5 Promotions have provided regular updates on the boxer’s health.

A fundraiser started by boxers in Belfast is currently ongoing and the promoters have expressed gratitude to fans for their support.

“Our champion is making progress every day and has started eating,” said the promoters in a statement on Monday.

“We await further details from the doctors if he is moved to a new ward with the progress he has made.”

“We cannot thank everyone enough for the kind messages and prayers. Keep those positive thoughts and prayers coming!”
