KZN news bites: KZN ActionSA coordinator joins MKĀ

Durban ā€“ Nathi Ngwenya, the provincial coordinator of ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal, has left the party to join the Jacob Zuma-led Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party. Ngwenya was welcomed to the MK on Friday in Umhlanga. This follows the recent defection of ActionSAā€™s former youth chairperson in Umzimkhulu to the party.

Dumbe ā€“ National Freedom Party secretary-general Teddy Thwala is taking the partyā€™s president, Ivan Barnes, to court for ā€œre-suspendingā€ him despite a court ruling preventing it. Thwala claims Barnes is ignoring the legal system and acting unlawfully.

Durban ā€“ MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has raised concerns about corruption in the city with eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba. Buthelezi forwarded reports from whistleblowers to Xaba, urging him to take action.

Estcourt ā€“ Former president Jacob Zuma is scheduled to speak at a memorial service on Saturday for six Umkhonto Wesizwe party members who died in an accident on their way to an event in Nkandla. The bodies have not been buried as they are awaiting DNA tests to identify them.

Westville ā€“ Among the 1,500 graduates at the University of KwaZulu-Natalā€™s 2024 spring graduation ceremonies on 18 and 19 September are a 26-year-old PhD student, Mikyle David, and a 69-year-old Bachelor of Law student, Deborah Masipa. David will receive his Doctor of Philosophy (Medicine) degree, while Masipa will be awarded her law degree.
