- A fake viral post claimed that investigators were chasing famous stars like Cyan Boujee for spending public money on themselves.
- The investigating unit says it only looks at government buying and asks people to report corruption instead of fake posts.
The Special Investigating Unit has blasted a fake viral rumour claiming it was going after famous social media influencers.
An account on X claimed that investigators wanted to see if stolen public money paid for their rich lifestyles.
The post named Thandeka Ngema, Sithelo Shozi and Honour Zuma, who is better known as Cyan Boujee. It claimed the unit was expanding a corruption case linked to Kagiso Lerutla to include them.
The investigating unit strongly denied the claims.
The unit said it does not target people directly. Investigators only look at how government departments buy things. They only bring people into a case if there is clear proof connecting them to wrongdoing.
The unit also made it clear that it cannot publicly name people in ongoing cases. Any new case needs to go through a formal process, which includes getting approval from the president.
The unit warned people not to rely on unverified social media posts. It asked the public to report real corruption using its hotline or email channels.
The fake story was called engagement bait. This is a trick where unknown accounts post shocking claims just to get attention, increase interactions, and make money through online programmes.
While the influencer rumour was fake, the unit did confirm a real freeze on assets worth R76.5 million.
Investigators recently got a Special Tribunal order to freeze 17 properties and seven luxury cars. These are linked to businessman Siyabonga Moses Goodwill Nkosi and his network.
Nkosi is married to an influencer named Leleti, who is known for showing off their rich lifestyle online.
