Former EFF student leader quits to join MK

Mpho Morolane, the first president of the EFF Student Command, has resigned to join the uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party.

Morolane, who was elected as the EFF Student Command president in 2015 and led the Fees Must Fall protests, was part of the party’s central leadership until he stepped down two years ago.

Since then, he has been an ordinary member of the EFF.

Morolane said he left the EFF because he believed the party had stopped making progress under its current leadership.

In an interview with Scrolla.Africa, Morolane said he joined the MK party because it is working to help black people and fight poverty.

“In just six months, MK has become the third-largest party, and its membership is growing every day,” he said.

In his resignation letter, Morolane said he never publicly criticised the EFF, even when he disagreed with decisions made by the leadership.

However, he said ongoing issues made him feel he could no longer stay a member.

Morolane is the latest high-profile EFF member to follow former deputy president Floyd Shivambu to former president Jacob Zuma’s MK party.
