Zuma cuts ties with the ANC at Nkandla MK launch

By Celani Sikhakhane

Former president Jacob Zuma has made it clear that his days at the ANC are over and his new political home, uMkhonto Wesizwe, won’t work with the party.

He made the announcement during the launch of the Msholozi branch of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK Party) in his homestead of kwaDakwadunuse in Nkandla.

“I will never go back to the ANC because that organisation is corrupt to the core. It is led by someone that I don’t believe is a member of the organisation. I am a full member of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party and we are not going to work with the ANC even after the election,” said Zuma.

Zuma told the crowd that uMkhonto Wesizwe needs to fix the country and fight for poor people.

He fixated on the decline of post offices in South Africa since he left power. He raised concerns that the South African Post Office (SAPO) wasn’t working as efficiently as it had during his tenure. He also lamented the shutting down of various post offices across the country, claiming that it was done deliberately to suppress the black poor majority.

In 2022, 60 SAPO branches across the nation merged or shut down after 60,000 employees had to be laid off after a decline in revenue.

The MK gathering was planned for the people of Nkandla and it was held at the backyard of Zuma’s home where they usually host family events.

He said people need to be clear that there’s no dual membership in the MK Party. People need to be able to make it clear to the public that they are fully members of the MK Party which has nothing to do with the ANC.

Zuma’s launch of the MK Party branch in his home shows that he is leaving the ANC branch where he has been a member for years.

He started his programme on Saturday by visiting the Shembe Baptist Church at their annual gathering at the Khenana Holy Mountain in Maphumulo.

He even wants the number of provinces to be reduced from nine to four.

In his proposal he said that the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape should be amalgamated into one province and renamed the Amaxhosa province.
