Zulu royal servants outraged as monthly pay stops

  • The Zulu royal workers did not get their money at the end of the month and could not go home.
  • The royal family has money problems despite getting funds from the provincial government and there are calls to spend less.

Servants working for the Zulu royal family are angry after their monthly pay was stopped without explanation.

The workers, who clean and look after the palaces, expected to be paid at the end of the month last Thursday.

One worker told Scrolla.Africa that they could not travel to see their families over the long weekend because they had no money.

“We have not been paid and it is very painful because we have families that we look after. We really don’t know why our salaries have not been paid,” the worker said.

Prince Thulani Zulu of the eZibindini Royal House speaks for the Zulu monarch. He said he did not know about the missing pay.

“I will try to get more details on this matter in order to confirm this matter,” he said.

The Zulu royal family has been struggling with money problems. This is even though the family gets large amounts of funding from the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government every year.

People have questioned how the royal money is managed. There have been calls for the Zulu Royal Household Trust to spend less.

The royal household has also been accused of failing to pay companies that provide it with services.

To help fix the money problems, some people have suggested that Zulu subjects should each give a R10 donation every month to support the family.
