Zulu king: Royal rebels brought ‘shame and disgrace’ to father’s legacy

By Celani Sikhakhane

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has said the royal battle being waged by regal rebels has cast a dark shadow over the legacy of his late father, King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu.

King Misuzulu raised the concerns during the opening of the House of Traditional Leadership and Khoi and San Leadership at the Old KwaZulu-Natal Legislature building in Ulundi on Tuesday.

He said that his father, King Zwelithini, must be turning in his grave at his home being torn apart by those who want to take the throne by force.

“This is shameful to my father after working so hard for this kingdom for almost 50 years. I will go to court to defend myself and this nation. Some in the royal family have gone too far to put the name of this nation into disrepute.

“The verbal attacks in public have tainted the Zulu nation in the world and the whole [of] South Africa so badly,” he said.

The opening took place three days before the second year anniversary of Zwelithini’s death on 12 March 2021.

In the meantime, the royal rebels, led by Prince Thokozani and King Misuzulu’s half brother Prince Simakade Jackson kaZwelithini, are looking for donations to fund their case against King Misuzulu at the North Gauteng High Court.

The case is set to be heard from 31 May until 2 June.

The rebels have revealed that the case has already cost them close to R2 million and the amount is expected to increase.

King Misuzulu has asked traditional leaders to pray for the unity of the royal family and an end to the squabbles taking place in the royal court over succession.

Prince Simakade and his forces believe that he is the rightful heir to the throne since he was adopted by King Misuzulu’s mother, the Queen Regent Mantfombi kaSobhuza Zulu (the great wife) of kwaKhangelamankengane royal palace.

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has been recognised by President Cyril Ramaphosa under the Traditional Leadership and Khoi and San Act.

The KZN government has released its annual budget of R65 million and on Friday it is expected to be increased when Finance MEC Peggy Nkonyeni announces her 2023/2024 provincial budget.
