A taxi owner was shot and killed while sitting inside his car at the Pan Africa Mall in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Thursday evening.

The man was shot during rush hour traffic at the busy mall. Sources at the scene said he was shot six times through the closed window of his car.

Tladi Lepoles, the spokesperson for the Alexandra Randburg Midrand Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta), confirmed the incident.

Lepoles said the man was a member of the association and had been with them for over 20 years.

“We are shocked by the killing of our members,” he said.

“There are no disputes or fights over anything. [The association] is at peace, and such incidents bring chilling fears because we don’t know what is happening.”

He said the driver had been taking passengers from Alexandra to Sandton. He was a peaceful man who respected his passengers and colleagues.

His passing has caused fear among other drivers on the same route.

Police officers were called to the scene.
