The death of South African singer Bulelwa “Zahara” Mkutukana has cast a shadow over her former record label TS Records, co-owned by DJ Sbu and TK Nciza.
Zahara, who passed away at only 36 years of age had been vocal about the financial disputes with her former label, which she alleged owed her millions in unpaid royalties and performance fees.
Zahara’s career with TS Records saw the release of three successful albums: Loliwe, Phendula, and Country Girl, before the label closed down in 2017.
However, the relationship between the artist and the label soured over financial disagreements. In 2019, Zahara made public claims against TS Records, insisting that she was underpaid for her performances, record sales, and radio royalties.
These allegations have resurfaced after her passing.
DJ Sbu and Nciza, the figures behind TS Records, have previously denied these claims. In 2021, DJ Sbu (Sibusiso Leope) rejected her claims. He announced on Massive Metro that Zahara was financially stable when they parted ways and even owed money to the label.
He also mentioned that the label had supported Zahara during her health and financial struggles.
TK Nciza, now the ANC provincial secretary, distanced himself from Zahara’s financial woes, stating, “Now that things are going bad she wants to make an excuse and point fingers,” and noting that he had not worked with her for three years.
Zahara’s health issues, particularly her liver problems possibly linked to alcohol use, were acknowledged by DJ Sbu, who recalled times when the label supported her through tough periods.
