Paris – South African opera singer Pretty Yende will perform at the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Saturday, 7 December 2024. This will be a big moment for the famous church after it was badly damaged by a fire in 2019. Yende will sing Gounod’s Ave Maria as part of a concert mixing classical and modern music. French President Emmanuel Macron will officially open the event, celebrating the €700-million restoration that rebuilt the church’s spire and added better fire protection.
Zimbabwe – Zimbabwe’s High Court has ruled that banning abortions for girls under 18 and victims of marital rape is against the law. Judge Maxwell Takuva said on 22 November that forcing victims to carry unwanted pregnancies is cruel treatment. Zimbabwe’s current laws allow abortion only if the mother’s life is in danger, the foetus has serious defects, or the pregnancy is from incest. UNICEF says about 77,000 unsafe abortions happen in Zimbabwe each year.

UK – Shoppers are angry with supermarkets Aldi, Morrisons, Tesco, and dairy company Arla Foods. They’re upset over a new farm trial that started on 26 November, using Bovaer, a feed additive that cuts methane emissions from cows by 27%. This is to reduce greenhouse gases from farming, but some customers don’t like it. Many have posted videos online showing themselves throwing away Arla products like Lurpak butter after the trial sparked over five million views and 13,000 comments online.
