World news bites: ‘Banana on a wall’ sells for R111 million

Rorisang Modiba brings you daily global updates.

Italy – It must be the most expensive banana on the market in the world. A banana taped to a wall has sold for a huge R111-million at a New York auction. The buyer, Justin Sun, received a certificate to recreate it and says he will eat the banana to keep the story of the art alive. Labelled Comedian, the artwork was created by artist Maurizio Cattelan and was first shown in 2019. Some people call it a joke, while others think it’s a clever way to highlight how absurd the art world can be.

US – Pamela Hayden, who voices Milhouse and other characters on The Simpsons, is leaving the show after 35 years. Her final episode will air on 24 November during the Treehouse of Horror special. Creator Matt Groening said Hayden made Milhouse feel real and funny, calling the character an important part of the show since 1989.

India – Delhi is struggling with some of the worst air pollution in the world. The government has called the situation a medical emergency, closing schools and urging people to stay indoors. The city’s first clinic for pollution-related health problems is overwhelmed by the growing number of patients. People like 64-year-old Deepak Rajak say the toxic air is worsening their asthma. However, many people, like Rajak, have to keep working even though the air is making them sick.

Kenya – President William Ruto has cancelled major deals with Indian businessman Gautam Adani. The agreements included plans to upgrade Nairobi’s airport and build power lines. The cancellations follow fraud and bribery charges against Adani in the US, with Ruto stating that new information led to his decision.
