Woman loses use of arms in pit bull attack

A 29-year-old from Duduza in Ekurhuleni has survived a savage mauling from two pit bulls, but says that she has completely lost the use of her arms.

Two weeks ago, Nonhlanhla Nhleko-Mabena was set upon by two pit bulls while walking home from a tavern in the middle of the night.

It is alleged the two dogs managed to flee from their owner’s home through a water pipe and exited 500 meters away to guard the outside of their home.

When the vicious dogs attacked Nhleko-mabena, she lost her balance, and fell to the ground and the dogs continued to bite her.

She was eventually rescued by residents who splashed the two dogs with boiling water.

She is now struggling to overcome the trauma, depressed and suicidal.

Nhleko-Mabena said that whenever she tries to close her eyes, she now sees the two dogs pulling chunks of her flesh off her body.

“I pleaded and screamed for help until my body was numb from the pain,” she told Scrolla.Africa.

“During the attack I slipped in and out of unconsciousness a number of times and every time I woke up I could feel them still pulling me either with my hair or skin.

“I pleaded for help but those who responded were too scared to come closer to rescue me from the vicious dogs,” she said.

She added that she has since lost her temporary job due to the injuries.

“I have two children aged seven and one whom I have to provide for. How am I going to support them now that I have lost the function of my arms?

“The doctors advised me that I might not regain the function and that the healing of the open wounds will take months,” she said.

“What quality of life do I have when I am forced to depend on others for basic things like bathing and feeding myself?”
