England – The British army recovered several horses that escaped from the Household Cavalry and ran through the streets of London on Wednesday morning. According to a statement sent to CNN by the British Army, the animals ran out during a routine exercise when some horses broke loose. Several individuals and horses are being treated for injuries. All the horses have been recovered. Six soldiers and seven horses were involved. Three soldiers are still in the hospital with minor injuries.
Kenya – Flash floods have killed at least 32 people and left two missing across almost half of Kenya. Heavy rains have been hitting the country since mid-March and have gotten worse over the last week, causing major floods and affecting over 103,500 people. The Kenyan Red Cross has rescued more than 188 people since the floods started. In Nairobi some roads were closed on Wednesday and many areas are still flooded after another day of heavy rain.
India – A huge trash dump in India’s capital caught fire on Tuesday, filling the air with harmful smoke. This is an ongoing problem with fires at landfills that the authorities have found hard to control. The Ghazipur landfill in New Delhi started burning on Sunday, releasing dangerous heat and methane gas, which adds to India’s climate issues. Although the fire was mostly put out by Tuesday, people living nearby were still suffering from sore throats and irritated eyes. These kinds of fires are often started by gases from rotting garbage.
Ukraine – Ukraine has started using advanced long-range ballistic missiles provided in secret by the United States, according to American officials. These missiles were included in a R5.7-billion aid package authorised by President Joe Biden in March and were delivered this month. They have been used to target Russian positions in occupied Crimea, as reported by US media. President Biden has also approved a new aid package for Ukraine. Previously, the US had supplied Ukraine with a less powerful version of the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), hesitating to send more powerful weaponry due to concerns about affecting the readiness of the US military.
Italy – Barbie may be the most financially successful movie ever to be directed by a female filmmaker, but it was beaten at the box office in Italy by There’s Still Tomorrow (C’è Ancora Domani). The film is also made by a woman and speaks directly about the female experience. Writer and singer Paola Cortellesi, 50, who made the movie, also stars as the main lead. It became a phenomenon in Italy last year, taking more money than both Barbie and Oppenheimer.
