- A 28-year-old woman from Philippi fears for her safety after her ex-boyfriend, who beat her unconscious, still walks free.
- She says he’s pressuring her to drop the charges and offering money but police have not yet acted.
A 28-year-old Philippi woman lives in fear while her ex-boyfriend, who beat her unconscious, remains free a month after she reported him.
The woman was attacked on 4 October after asking if her boyfriend was going to work.
“He left me with bruises; my sin was asking him if he was not going to work. Then he started beating me, saying that I was controlling him. Asking your boyfriend that question doesn’t mean that you must be assaulted. SAPS are quiet about the case, and I am not feeling safe,” she said.
Now her ex is pressuring her to drop the charges.
“I am not feeling safe. I have been receiving messages from him asking that I withdraw the case and, in return, he will give me money every month. It feels like I would be selling my life,” she said.
The victim described the severity of the assault.
“He beat me up so badly that my eyes were swollen shut, my face was swollen, and I couldn’t go anywhere. He locked the door and chased away residents who came to rescue me. I think he wanted to kill me because he beat me up until I was unconscious,” she said.
Police spokesperson Andisiwe Manyana confirmed the case.
“According to reports, the complainant argued with her boyfriend when he started to chase her from his place. She then asked for her belongings, and that is when he refused, closed the door, and started to assault her until she became unconscious,” said Manyana.
No arrests have been made.
