Angry Harrismith residents caused chaos on the N3 national road, petrol bombing one truck while another fell over while trying to escape the carnage.

Free State police have arrested six suspects and are still monitoring the situation in and around various parts of Harrismith near the N3.

The incident took place just a day after Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela’s car was pelted with rocks, as she narrowly escaped the wrath of protestors.

Residents of Tshiame, Khalanyoni and Makgolokweng want their town to be removed from Maluti a Phofung Municipality.

A protesting resident defended the actions of the rioters, pointing out that the violence committed on 16 June 1976 was necessary, and had a positive impact.

“The incident saw loss of lives but that is not our mission. But we are prepared to destroy property to get fruitful results,” said the protester.

“The president has moved the country into lockdown level 3. We have been protesting since the end of May and have decided to move our violence to level 3.”

Another protester said they have not seen anything being done for residents by the municipality.

“We will protest until President Ramaphosa himself comes to hear us out.”

The residents said the burning of a truck was just an introduction.

Drivers were not harmed. Scrolla.Africa could not reach either one for comment.

A cop on the scene said they have been working hard to try and stop the residents.

“This is the first time I’ve seen people who are not scared of rubber bullets. The situation is very tense but the men and women in blue will be the final winners.”

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele told Scrolla.Africa the driver of the truck was on the N3 near Bergview and the protestors threw a petrol bomb at the truck which set it alight. Another truck blocked the road while turning around.

He said police are working to bring stability and allow traffic to flow freely on the national road.

He said the suspects are expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
