- Marvellous Michael Nyambi, 24, collapsed from heat exhaustion and died a day later at Yusuf Dadoo Hospital.
- Zwelethu Tekete, 26, was found unresponsive at the same stadium and declared dead despite paramedic CPR attempts.
The Johannesburg metro police have confirmed that two young men died while taking part in a fitness test for trainee officer jobs.
Marvellous Michael Nyambi, 24, from Rabie Ridge, collapsed from heat exhaustion on 28 August during the selection programme at Ruimsig Stadium.
He was rushed to Yusuf Dadoo Hospital but died the following day.
Just days later, on 1 September, 26-year-old Zwelethu Tekete from Braamfischerville was brought into the same stadium unresponsive.
Paramedics tried CPR, but he could not be saved and was declared dead at the scene.
Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla sent condolences to both families.
Pictures from the training showed candidates running, doing push-ups and climbing a wall as part of the tests.
The city is currently processing thousands of applications to recruit 500 new trainees for its 2026 intake.
Those selected will go through 18 months of training at the metro police academy before they “might be considered” for full-time posts.
Fihla added: “The wellbeing and safety of all candidates and officers remain our priority.”
