Two security guards were shot and taken to hospital while trying to recover a stolen car on Tuesday afternoon in Samora Machel township, Cape Town.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the police are investigating the incident.
“Police received a complaint about security guards being shot. When they arrived, they found out that two security guards were tracking a car that was hijacked in Bellville earlier this month. Unknown suspects shot at them,” said Van Wyk.
Both guards were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The stolen car was towed to the Bellville police station for further investigation.
Resident Lungelo Fulanisi, a resident of Samora Machel, is glad the security guards survived the shooting.
“I hope they recover. Our area is a hotspot for hijackings and robberies. Most of the time, victims get killed,” he said.
He added that residents often feel unsafe.
“Everyone knows that hijacked cars are found in Samora and Philippi. We see these things but are afraid to report them because we don’t trust the police. The shooting of security guards shows that the hijackers are dangerous.”
