- Gunmen kill two security guards sitting in their car while protecting workers in Gugulethu township.
- Residents fear gangsters demanding protection money will stop development in their area.
Incidents of shootings by protection fee gangs in Cape Town are on the rise.
In the latest incident, two security guards were shot dead in their car while protecting workers at a tower site in Gugulethu, Cape Town, on Tuesday.
Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said gunmen opened fire on the guards, who were sitting in a Datsun Go in NY 108, around 10.40am.
“The two adult males did not survive the onslaught on their lives and were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” said Swartbooi.
A resident, who fears being named, says the shooting might be linked to protection fee gangs.
“I heard that they were sitting inside the vehicle while escorting employees who were working on the tower. It is not the first time that people get shot in Gugulethu. A few months back, security personnel were shot in one of the housing projects by the protection fee gang,” said the resident.
This is the second attack in a week. Last Thursday, four guards protecting waste collectors were shot and wounded in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East.
“Being a security guard has become more dangerous in Cape Town. Even SAPS are better than us. We only want to put food on the table for our families. We don’t want trouble; we just want to be employees,” said a security guard.
