Twitter has removed a tweet from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari as it violated one of their rules.
Buhari is not the first president to have his Twitter account suspended. In January this year, the account of former US president Donald Trump was permanently suspended after he posted tweets that ‘incited violence’.
The removed tweet from Buhari was said to incite violence as it suggested that the president would treat those who do not obey the law “in a language they understand.”
He went on to say there are people who are attempting a violent uprising against his government and that those people will be dealt with accordingly.
Some of the deleted tweets said: “In the area of security, we have changed Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General, and we are demanding that we rise fully to the challenges confronting us. There must be zero tolerance for all those bent on destroying our country by promoting crime and insurrection!”
The Igbo people from the south east of the country complain that they have been systematically discriminated against and virtually entirely excluded from any important government posts.
Nigeria has seen an increase in arson attacks on their electoral offices as well as police stations with several officers reportedly being killed.
The tweet stems from the attack on government buildings which the president blamed on regional secessionists.
Buhari said that these groups are similar to the groups during the 1967-70 civil war in the Biafra region that saw one million people die.
This along with his tweets were condemned widely and violated Twitter’s ‘abusive behaviour’ rules. The social media platform also gave the president’s account a 12-hour suspension.
