Trump snubs G20 summit in South Africa

By Razeen Gutta

US President Donald Trump has declined the invitation to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg scheduled for 22 and 23 November 2025.

Instead, he will send his Vice President, JD Vance, to lead the US delegation.

The decision has raised concerns about strained relations between the two countries. Trump expressed no interest in attending the summit, focusing more on announcing that the 2026 G20 summit will be hosted in Florida.

The G20 Summit in Johannesburg aims to promote solidarity, equality, and sustainability, with South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasising the importance of hearing all voices.

As the first African nation to host the G20 summit, South Africa is expected to attract international attention and investment.

The summit will bring together world leaders to address pressing global challenges and foster economic co-operation.

With diplomatic tensions and Trump’s absence, the summit’s success relies on global co-operation and dialogue.
