Trump set for election rematch with Biden

By Arthur Greene

The US is on course for a repeat of the 2020 election, as former president Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden swept aside the other contestants this week.

Donald Trump’s last remaining challenger in the Republican Party, Nikki Haley, dropped out of the race on Wednesday.

“The time has now come to suspend my campaign,” Haley told a small crowd in South Carolina, before warning them that Trump must earn their support and not take it for granted.

The former governor never looked like she posed a serious threat to Trump, who has kept a tight hold on the Republican Party since he left office three years ago.

She was forced to finally admit defeat after the former president claimed an overwhelming victory on Super Tuesday.

Super Tuesday is the night that Republicans and Democrats across 16 states in America vote for their preferred candidate in the upcoming election. Historically, it has proved to be one of the most important dates in the lead-up to the election.

Biden also registered big wins on the night, as he looks on course to secure the Democratic nomination.

Battle of the Oldies

When Trump and Biden went up against each other four years ago, they were already the two oldest presidential candidates in US history.

When they face off again, Biden will be 81 and Trump will be 78.

Biden claimed victory in 2020, but questions about his age continue to put doubt in voters’ minds.

Trump, who is no spring chicken himself, faces other issues. When he was beaten in 2020, he left office in total disgrace.

He falsely claimed that the election had been stolen from him, and told a crowd of his supporters to “fight like hell” before they stormed the US Capitol.

He faces four looming criminal trials. He was the first ever president to face two impeachments – when charges were brought against him to have him removed from office.

But despite everything, his support has remained strong, and many see him as the frontrunner in November’s election.
