  • MEC Bukiwe Fanta says 3,000 child abuse cases were reported in one year in the Eastern Cape.
  • She called on society to protect children and recommit to their safety and well-being.

Three thousand cases of child abuse were reported to the Department of Social Development in the Eastern Cape in the financial year ending 31 March 2025.

MEC Bukiwe Fanta said the number has pushed her to go all in as she prepares to launch Child Protection Week.

Speaking at a gathering in Gqeberha, Fanta said the campaign would shine a light on the rights of children and how they must be protected from violence and abuse.

She also plans to use the week to celebrate and support people living with autism, and to push for their inclusion in society.

Fanta said the stats show how serious the problem is, and called on the public to act.

“In South Africa, the statistics surrounding violence against children are alarming. Recent studies reveal that many children experience various forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, and sexual violence,” she said.

She added that neglect and exploitation make the crisis worse, causing harm not only to the children but to their families too.

“Violence against children is not just a statistic; it is a harsh reality that affects the very foundation of our society. It hinders children’s development, disrupts families, and stunts the growth of our communities,” she said.

Fanta urged communities to reflect on the challenges children face, and to recommit to keeping them safe.
