It was glitz, lights and dreams come true at the 16th annual South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA). The glamorous event which honours the country’s biggest traditional music artists was held in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, on Saturday night.
With high-profile celebrities like Kelly Khumalo, and Vendaboy blessing the event, Nomtiti took home the artist of the year award for a fourth time. The group from Mahikeng, in the North West, was led by its two mentors and group leader Disebo Mothusiemang.
“We are honoured to be here. Recognition in the form of a nomination was more than a great achievement for us. A win is such a bonus for us and we thank our fans who voted for us to become the winners once more,” said Disebo.
The awards aim to unify the country through a shared love of traditional music and culture. With almost all of South Africa’s cultures and traditions represented through the festivities.
The awards also feature another prominent element which is the beautiful outfits worn by all the people. Kelly Khumalo dazzled the audience in the evening with a performance of her two hit songs, Empini and Esiphambanweni ft Hlengiwe.
Speaking to the media, Zandile Ndzimande SATMA will continue honouring traditional talents in different spheres.
