“The ANC is heading in the wrong direction!” uMngeni Mayor mocks ANC motor gaffe

When an ANC vehicle made a wrong turn down the N3 freeway in Howick on Sunday, the last person its driver wanted to see was the DA mayor of uMngeni – but that is exactly who drove past!

The Ford Ranger from Moses Mabhida Region in Pietermaritzburg – identifiable because of its ANC colours – tried to illegally reverse on the N3 on-ramp in Howick.

Mayor Christopher Pappas later tweeted a video of the reversing car.

He accompanied the video with the message: “We welcome the ANC in uMngeni as it is a free country for all to participate in all political activities. We do however kindly ask that they obey the rules of the road and stop reversing down… the ramp.”

It was clear that the driver had missed the turnoff for the destination of the party for a provincial event to mark 8 January, the ANC’s birthday.

Unfortunately, there was no way to get there down the freeway. The driver’s only option was to reverse slowly using the yellow line.

Twitter was abuzz with jokes about the clumsy driver.

“[The ANC] is actually highly skilled at reversing. They have perfected reversing to an absolute science and even an art form over their tenure of 28 years. All in the name of progress,” joked one Tweeter.

“The ANC has been reversing South Africa for the past few years,” wrote another.

Andrew Gerber[a] chimed in with: “All the ANC knows how to do is going backwards.”

Mayor Pappas would have been the last person the ANC would have wanted to see, after he spent last week sparring with ANC MEC Jomo Sibiya over the rollout of aid for flood victims in uMngeni.

Sibiya was accused of trying to turn uMngeni into a no-go area for other political parties and into his own fiefdom.
