Tanzania has tested imported coronavirus test kits using pawpaw and goats – and alleged they could be giving false readings.
President John Magufuli says he instructed Tanzanian security forces to check the quality of the test kits. The testers used several non-human samples too, including from a pawpaw and a goat. These tested positive for Covid-19.
Magufuli says this meant it’s likely that some people were being tested positive when they were not.
By Sunday, Tanzania had 480 cases and 17 deaths.
Magufuli also said he was sending a plane to collect a herbal cure promoted by Madagascar’s president – a remedy backed by no scientific evidence. (For now it’s in the President Trump “bleach” category of cures).
