Teens turn school into a ‘nightclub’

Learners at Leiden High School in Delft bring Bluetooth speakers, alcohol and drugs to school to party.

Concerned parent Lulama Luthuli said she often sees students smoking and dancing to the music played on the speakers.

“As a parent, I thought when they saw me, they would run away, but they didn’t,” she said. “I walked near the school fence, and they just looked at me and continued with what they were doing.”

Pupils have also damaged a part of the fence to get in and out of the school more easily.

Parent Malibongwe Jack was shocked to see the damage caused by the learners.

“While the school locks the gate, learners have found a way to get out of school to go and buy drugs and alcohol and bring it back to school,” he said.

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Unathi Booi said the school is aware of parents’ concerns and has acted on them in the interests of the safety of teachers and learners.

“The learners have reported incidents relating to substance abuse and ill-discipline. Four learners were suspended recently and will face a disciplinary committee hearing in line with the code of conduct,” said Booi.

The school also held a disciplinary hearing involving learners who were found with illegal substances in their possession.

“Learners are not allowed to bring loudspeakers to the school. If a learner is found guilty of this, the principal confiscates the speaker. This is stipulated in the code of conduct,” said Booi.

The school has a relationship with the local policing authorities, and random searches and seizures are performed there from time to time.
