A teen mother, juggling parenthood and matrics, wanted to let loose this New Year’s Eve — but instead she was stabbed to death.
Owethu Chagu, a 16-year-old mother of a two-month-old baby boy from Delft in Cape Town, was out with her friend on the night of 31 December.
However, just minutes after midnight, the friend’s mother received a call informing her that her daughter and Owethu had both been stabbed.
“I was told to rush to the hospital where I found my 17-year-old daughter with multiple stab wounds; Owethu was already dead,” said the mother.
Her daughter, who is now in a stable condition, explained to her that they were attacked after they decided to go and meet the 20-year-old father of Owethu’s child.
She claimed that a woman overheard them talking about meeting the father.
“My daughter and her friend went out to look for the deceased’s baby daddy, and while they were walking the streets stressing about his whereabouts, a woman who was walking behind them allegedly told them to stop searching for him because they wouldn’t find him. They didn’t see her, and were surprised when she joined in their conversation.”
Her daughter asked the woman to leave them alone.
After they asked the woman to leave them alone, she allegedly broke a Savannah bottle she was carrying and started stabbing them, telling them to “leave her boyfriend alone”.

Thembelani Wright, Owethu’s father, has demanded justice for his daughter’s murder.
“We are struggling to accept her death, and our wish is for the suspect to rot in jail for what she did. My daughter was looking forward to doing Grade 12 and going to university, but that will not happen anymore because someone decided to cut her life short,” he said.
Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said Delft police are investigating a murder case.
“Delft police responded to a complaint in the early hours of the 1st of January 2024, upon arrival at a local medical facility, they found the body of a female aged 16 who sustained multiple stab wounds,” said Swartbooi.
Owethu’s family says that a 28-year-old woman has been arrested for her murder. SAPS did not confirm the arrest.
