An impressive swim by Tatjana Schoenmaker has boosted the South African Olympic dream after she qualified for the 100m breaststroke semi-final with an Olympic record time.

Schoenmaker came in with a time of 1:04.82, beating Lilly King’s record set in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The semi-final will take place at 2:50am on Monday morning as Schoenmaker attempts to get into the final of the event and perhaps earn South Africa’s first medal of the games.

Schoenmaker has proved today that she has what it takes to earn glory for her nation.

Known for her strength in 200m swims, she said this week that the 100m was a warmup for her ahead of the 200m events. She’ll now hopefully also be reassessing her chances in the 100m after an incredible swim.
