Stowaway survives freezing conditions in flight from SA to Europe

A man who hid in the wheel section of a freight plane which flew from Johannesburg to the Netherlands has been admitted to hospital, Dutch police have said.

“The man is doing well considering the circumstances and has been taken to a hospital,” Dutch police said in a statement.

The unnamed man would have braved freezing conditions for several hours on the perilous journey – a trip which police say would kill most who undertake it.

As well as the freezing conditions, low oxygen levels at high altitudes mean that stowaways rarely survive long-haul flights.

The plane took off from Johannesburg and stopped off at Nairobi in Kenya before touching down in Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport in the Netherlands on Sunday.

“Our first concern of course was for his health,” the statement continued.

“This is definitely very unusual that someone was able to survive the cold at such a height – very, very unusual.“
