Tottenham Hotspur threw a spanner in the works of Liverpool’s incredible home run as they got a 1-1 draw at Anfield this evening.
Despite dominating possession, the Reds struggled to find a breakthrough with Spurs playing a rock-solid low block to deny Jürgen Klopp’s side too many chances.
Both teams were denied goals by the woodwork in the first half with Virgil Van Dijk getting onto the end of a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner before Pierre-Emile Hojberg drove a shot onto the outside of the post after a clinical Spurs counter attack. The half time whistle blew with the game goalless on a teasing Anfield night.
But the visitors shocked the crowd to get the breakthrough just before the hour mark.
Harry Kane controlled the ball well before finding Ryan Sessegnon down the left hand side. The 21-year-old crossed it in for a calm and composed Son Heung Min to slot it home.
Liverpool continued to look for the perfect incision, dominating proceedings and winning the ball back quickly. With 15 minutes to play, the equaliser came as a Luis Diaz shot from range got a deflection to make it 1-1.
The final moments were all about the Reds as the Kop rallied them on. Spurs remained resolute at the back, however, holding on for what was an important point in their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.
Liverpool, who are only top of the table on goal difference, will rely on results elsewhere to keep them in contention for the Premier League title and the highly-coveted quadruple.
Title rivals Manchester City take on Newcastle United in their game in hand at the Etihad tomorrow knowing that they will reclaim their place at the summit if they avoid defeat.
