Spurs go marching on

By Razeen Gutta

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side has gone top of the Premier League table for the time being.

Back-to-back wins for the London club after a 2-0 victory away to Bournemouth in Saturday’s early kick-off.

James Maddison continued his excellent start to life as Tottenham’s number 10, with a goal to add to his two assists in a white shirt.

The England international broke the deadlock inside 20 minutes after staying onside to finish off a Pape Sarr through ball.

The hosts got back into the game and may have gone level with Phillip Billing and Dominic Solanke both coming very close to finding the back of the Spurs goal.

Just as they had begun to find their feet in the second period, though, Dejan Kulusevski made it 2-0; to ensure the North London side would take all three points.

For Andoni Iraola, a first win in charge is still awaited.

His chin will be up though and that win may soon come because the back-to-back defeats for Bournemouth came at the hands of Liverpool and Spurs after decent performances.

Tottenham’s hopes of a strong finish are coupled with a positive statistic. They have scored two-plus goals in each of their first three games at the beginning of a campaign for just the third time, with top-four finishes coming in both 2009-10 and 2018-19 when it happened before.

Spurs next take on Fulham in the Carabao Cup second round on Tuesday.
