The Rugby World Cup Champions have not played any test matches since they won the cup in Japan in June 2019.
While Georgia can’t really be considered serious competition, South Africa’s Director of Rugby, Rassie Erasmus, is still excited about the two-match series against Georgia in South Africa ahead of the tour of the British and Irish Lions.
“Nothing beats a full-blooded international to test your skill set, readiness and ability under pressure,” said Erasmus in a media release.
The coach will be in charge for the first time on the weekend of 2 July, with the second clash set for the next weekend. Exact dates, venues and kick-off times are yet to be announced.
Erasmus said Jacques Nienaber, his coaching staff and management have been working to get the team prepared.
“This series gives us an opportunity to be active after such a long lay-off,” he said.
Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber said he was excited about the prospect of playing international rugby after the long break due to the pandemic.
“The confirmation of the Georgia tests and the announcement of the British & Irish Lions squad have caused a lot of excitement. I’m sure this will lift the players,” he said.
“We can now accelerate our preparations for our return to test rugby.”
